INSULATION AND SEALING
For most homes, correct air-sealing and improved insulation carry the fastest Return On Investment (ROI), averaging 30% savings in heating/cooling cost, and an ROI of 1 to 4 years. This is because most homes were built at a time when industry standards for insulation were almost non-existent. No one foresaw energy costs as high as they are today. But even with more recently built homes, we find the insulation and air-sealing to be lacking either because builders are not yet well-educated when it comes to energy efficiency, or because developers, at times, cut corners to reduce costs wherever they can.
By making educated adjustments to the home’s insulation and air sealing, significant savings are achieved.
Green Energy Act, with our team of BPI™ (Building Performance Institute) and NYSERDA accredited professionals, will get you through the process – starting with a Comprehensive Home Assessment (CHA), also referred to as an energy audit, and all the way through the work itself – air-sealing, blowing the attic, etc.
A word of caution – air-sealing and insulation are not an afterthought. It is part of building science. More often than not, when we come to do an audit at a house where the homeowner himself tried to do some insulation, we encounter plenty of errors that not only do not remedy the situation, but at times even make it worst. Applying insulation incorrectly can cause moisture to accumulate, and bring about mold. Insulation without proper air-sealing is like trying to stay warm riding on a motorcycle with a thick sweater but without a windbreaker... Air-sealing without the science behind it, can bring about sick-home syndrome.
Let our team show you how we can assist you in keeping more of the heat generated in the home in the winter, and the cool in the summer, inside the house.
For new homes we will review architectural plans (HERS rating) and make recommendations.
